Rotational Inertia

Collision
Question:
The two disks have the same radius, and the same mass. Which one will reach the end of the ramp first?

Purpose:
To show the relationship between an object's moment of inertia and the distribution of mass within it.

Picture
Materials
  • A wooden disk and a metal ring with the same diameter and equal mass

Procedure
  1. Set the ring and disk at the top of the ramp.
  2. Hold them back with some kind of barrier.
  3. Remove the barrier, and observe which one reaches the bottom first.

Activity
  • Determine both the theoretical and experimental values for inertia of both disks.
